Schools Animal Ethics Committee (SAEC)

What you need to know!

Hatching chicks in your classroom is a fun and enriching educational experience that engages students across multiple areas of learning. At The Burrows Family Farm, we’re here to support your hatching project every step of the way—so please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions!

Important: WA Schools must obtain prior approval from the Schools Animal Ethics Committee (SAEC) before participating in our chicken hatching program.

Your SAEC application will require a confirmed booking date, so ensure you book in advance.

Applications must be submitted online through the SAEC website well in advance of your planned start date. Although The Burrows Family Farm is not affiliated with the SAEC, we are committed to helping teachers navigate the process and ensuring your hatching experience is positive and hassle-free.

Approval to hatch chicks is only granted at SAEC meetings, which are held in Weeks 3 and 8 of each school term.

Applications must be submitted at least two weeks prior to these meetings.

Please note: Hatching eggs without SAEC approval may breach the Animal Welfare Act 2002 (WA) and the Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes.

If approved, your SAEC permission is valid for three (3) years, allowing you to conduct the activity once annually during this period.
